The Jockey Club of Canada announced Jan. 29 the finalists for the 2019 Sovereign Awards honouring Canada’s champions and recognizing their outstanding achievements in Canadian Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding. The winners of the twelve horse categories and the five human categories will be announced at the 45th Annual Sovereign Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 16, 2020 at Universal Eventspace in Vaughan, ON.

Terra Racing’s AMALFI COAST, a late season start who won three stakes races in succession on turf and Tapeta is the lone 3-time nominee, making the final three for Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, Female Sprinter and Female Turf Horse. Her trainer Kevin Attard is a finalist for Outstanding Trainer.

GLOBAL ACCESS (3-Year-Old Male, Turf Male), PINK LLOYD (Older Male and Male Sprinter) and British Columbia champion HERE’S HANNAH (Older Female Main Track, Female Sprinter) are all two-time finalists in various categories.

CHIEFSWOOD STABLES and SAM-SON FARMS have nominations each for Outstanding Owner and Breeder.

In addition to Kevin Attard, Mark Casse and Norm McKnight are finalists for top trainer. For Owner, Stronach Stables made the final three and in the Breeder category, Ivan Dalos looks to repeat.

Eurico Rosa Da Silva, Patrick Husbands and Rafael Hernandez are the three jockey nominees.

The Female Sprint category has four nominees which indicates a tie for the award. The four nominees are Amalfi Coast, Here’s Hannah, Sister Peacock and Summer Sunday.

In addition to the 17 Sovereign Awards listed above, Charles E. Fipke will be presented with the E. P. Taylor Award of Merit and Harvey Warner will be presented with the Special Sovereign Award in recognition of their outstanding commitment and dedication to the Thoroughbred Industry in Canada.

Winners of the three 2019 Media Awards will also be presented at the 45th Annual Sovereign Awards Ceremony. The three finalists in each of the media categories will be announced on or before February 15, 2020. The Media Awards are judged by the Journalism Professors at Humber, School of Media Studies & Information Technology, in Toronto, Ontario.

Additionally, the winner of the Award for Outstanding Groom, to be presented by Sponsor OLG, will be announced on or before February 15, 2020.

Tickets to the 45th Annual Sovereign Awards Ceremony are $250 each, with tables of ten discounted to $2000. Early-Bird tickets are also available for a discounted price of $225 until March 15, 2020.
