There will be celebrations for horses and humans at the 50th SOVEREIGN AWARDS presented by The Jockey Club of Canada on April 24 at Paramount Eventspace in Woodbridge. Festivities begin with cocktails at 5 p.m.
The stars of 2024 will be honoured and many of them will be horses from the Kevin Attard or Mark Casse barns. Attard could be in line for his first-ever Outstanding Trainer Award, a trophy Casse has won 16 times. Attard guided Moira to a Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf win in November and he became just the fifth Canadian trainer to win a Breeders’ Cup race.
Moira will receive a Special Sovereign Award, as she is not eligible for an award for 2024 with only two Canadian starts.
Moira figures prominently in the media categories also. Two of the finalists for Writing are tales of Moira’s journey and her human friends and one of the stories was published by Canadian Thoroughbred.
Two of the three finalists for Outstanding Photograph are also of Moira.
Longtime farm trainer and manager Ian Dick will receive the Off-Track Worker Award and he has been instrumental in preparing horses for Paul Buttigieg and clients at Buttigieg Training Centre.
Emma-Jayne Wilson will also receive a Special Sovereign Award and Roger Attfield will be presented with the E.P. Taylor Award of Merit. Contact The Jockey Club for tickets.
