Prince of Wales Stakes winning trainer PAUL NIELSEN assisted with the draw for the 86th Prince of Wales Stakes on Thursday, Sept. 9 and a field of eight has been entered. Nielsen saddled LE CINQUIEME ESSAI to win the 2002 ‘Wales’. Karen Ross was also on hand and she was the groom for Le Cinquieme Essai who was owned by Anne and William Scott and ridden by Brian Bochinski.

The race will not have Queen’s Plate winner SAFE CONDUCT who will await the Breeders’ Stakes on turf.

Heading the field for this year’s ‘Wales will be the third- and fifth-place finishers from the Plate, HC HOLIDAY (Ami’s Holiday), owned and bred by Ivan Dalos and KEEP GRINDING (Tizway), owned by Josh Attard, trained by Tino Attard and bred by Huntington Stud Farm. Either one of those 3-year-olds could go off as favourite.

Plate Trial winner AVOMAN (Old Forester), 6th in the Plate, will take support for DMac Racing and La Huerta and trainer Don MacRae. In addition to HC HOliday, Kevin Attard will saddle HARLAN ESTATE (Kantharos), seventh in the Plate and HADDASSAH, 8th in the Plate for Al and Bill Ulwelling.

TIDAL FORCES, ninth in the Plate, will have a go for Sam-Son farms and trainer Gail Cox.

Two new faces to the Canadian Triple Crown are CURLIN’S CATCH, a dirt stakes winner for Breeze Easy and trainer Mark Casse who was fifth in the Woodbine Oaks. Curlin’s Catch, a filly, is the only entrant to have ever tried traditional dirt and trainer Casse has won this race with fillies Wonder Gadot and Dixie Strike.

And READY AT DAWN, claimed from Sam-Son farm by Doubled Blooded Stable and trainer Daryl Ezra, recently won a maiden race on turf by 7 1/2 lengths.
