King’s Plate winner MANSETTI was one of eight horses nominated to the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on September 9. The Prince of Wales is the second jewel of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown and it is run on the dirt at 1 3/16 miles.
Owned by Al and Bill Ulwelling, Mansetti is trained by Kevin Attard, who has won two ‘Wales races for the Ulwellings in the last three years. Mansetti’s front-running style figures to help him again at Fort Erie.
Six other nominees were all behind Mansetti in the Plate, including third-place finisher Notorious Gangster, trained by Josie Carroll, and Scorching, who was a neck behind ‘Gangster in fourth.
Scorching worked on the dirt training track at Woodbine on Monday morning, Sept. 1 , 5 furlongs in 1:02.60. The Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch-owned three-year-old will have Dylan Davis on board for the injured Jose Lezcano. Davis rode Scorching to a second-place finish to Mansetti in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes.
Kevin Attard is also expected to enter Dewolf, fifth in the Plate and Faber, sixth in the Plate, in the ‘Wales.
The maiden Mythical Man, who was 12th in the Plate, is nominated, as is Ashley’s Archer, who was 13th in the Plate.
Humber River, a recent winner at the optional claiming class, is a new face in the probable field.
Stronach Stables’ Runaway Again, who was 10th in the Plate, had a fast workout on the dirt on Monday morning, 5 furlongs in 59.60.
The draw for the post position for the Prince of Wales will take place on Thursday, Sept. 4.
