It seems appropriate that a jewel like Daz Lin Dawn ($2.20) would win the Emerald Downs Handicap at Hastings Racecourse, something she did by seven lengths when jockey Richard Hamel turned her loose after being last of four and wide around the first turn and for a good part of the jaunt down the backstretch. When it came time to run, she quickly dispelled any doubt that might have begun to creep into minds of those that made her a dime to the dollar. About five-sixteenths from home, Hamel asked, she answered and in an eighth of a mile, the quiz was over. Jazz Lady ran a credible second under the circumstances and Sail On By kept plugging away to be third. Hamel would have had to fall off Daz Lin Dawn for either to win.
Daz Lin Dawn’s stablemate Morning Blurs set the early pace with Jazz Lady in pursuit. Their efforts, while admirable, only delayed the inevitable. Jazz Lady took over the lead from Morning Blurs after a half-mile only to see another kind of blur blow past her on the final turn. You had to witness it to fully appreciate it.
Daz Lin Dawn is by Popular, an obscure stallion by Saint Ballado who won twice in 15 starts and stood in California prior to his death in 2014. He is currently 62nd on the California sire list. No matter, he was bred to the Meadowlake mare Summer Bay and the result was first, Dashing Don (see below) and then Daz Lin Dawn who was brought into this world in British Columbia by breeders John Shone, Jacqui Shone and Samantha Shead who sold her in the 2015 CTHS Sale for $15,000. Daz Lin Dawn is owned by JDP Holdings Ltd., Delton Stables and trainer Nancy Betts.
