Vinery Stables’ Indian Evening won his second race and first added-money crown, in the $152,700 Swynford Stakes, Sunday at Woodbine.
Indian Evening, a Kentucky-bred son of Indian Charlie, was sent off as the 4-5 choice in the seven-furlong feature contested over the Toronto oval Polytrack.
It was Buongiorno Johnny who set the early tone, taking the field through opening splits of :22.87 and :45.67 in the event for two-year-olds. Indian Evening, with Tyler Pizarro up, was sitting third, waiting for the cue to take aim at the pacesetter.
Pizarro launched his outside bid just before the turn for home, storming to the front in early stretch, then going on to score by three lengths. Lockout was second, while Ocala Son took third. The final time was 1:22.57.
Indian Evening’s victory came after a third-place finish to Union Rags over a sloppy track in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special on August 15.
He had won his debut a month earlier, on July 10, taking a six-furlong ‘Poly’ race at Woodbine by 1 ½ lengths.
“I thought it set up beautifully,” said winning conditioner Josie Carroll. “I could see Tyler getting to work on him a little bit on the backside because he was loafing along a little bit. But this horse just has a big kick and when he did get in gear, he got in gear.”
Carroll, who is once again enjoying a strong campaign, believes the bay colt will only get better.
“He’s still an inexperienced horse,” she offered. “His last race was in the slop where everything was going on and he probably didn’t learn a lot.”
Indian Evening paid $3.60, $2.60, $2.10, combining with Lockout ($3.40, $2.80) for a $10.30 exactor. Ocala Son ($4.50) completed a $48.70 triactor.
