Increases across the board at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society’s Alberta Yearling Sale on September 17 were good news for the Alberta breeding industry. Following a year of uncertainty during the Covid-19 pandemic and a tough sale which realized a median of just $4,500, the 2021 auction had strong increases.
Gross sales for 39 yearlings sold reached $405,600, up from $327,400 a year ago. The average yearling price was up to $10,962 from $8,394 and the median had the biggest jump, up to $9,500.
A sizy chestnut gelding by Value Plus from the stakes-winning mare Holiday Maker, by Harlan’s Holiday, topped the sale at $32,000, Bred by Billy and Shirley Matier, the gelding was bought by Don Knight and Don Danard. Foaled in Alberta, the Alberta-bred sales topper is the second foal of the mare who is a half-sister to $500,000 earner and stakes winner Adore.
The top filly of the sale was a $25,000 daughter of Tapiture out of the Macho Uno mare Carmen’s Kiss. Sold by Scott Palmer Ranching to Shot in the Dark Racing Corp., the filly is a half-sister to two runners, both stakes winners.
