Amiable Grace, under Emma-Jayne Wilson, made it two straight wins in taking the seven-furlong, $112,400 Sweet Briar Too Stakes, on Friday, Canada Day, at Woodbine.
A four-year-old bay daughter of Alphabet Soup, trained by Mike Doyle and owned by Windhaven, Amiable Grace, at 8-1, fended off a trio of rivals, including champion and multiple stakes winner Biofuel, who finished fourth in a three-horse place photo, to notch the added-money triumph.
It was last year’s Fury Stakes champion Resentless who took the field through an opening quarter in :23.52 and a half-mile in :46.82.
Wilson kept a patient hand, forging Amiable Grace, fourth at the stretch call, to the lead late, holding off their rivals for the score.
At the wire, Amiable Grace was a half-length winner. D’wild Beach, at 26-1, was second and Rashnaa, sent off at 9-1, finished third.
“I was pretty impressed,” said Wilson. “Biofuel was coming and I didn’t know if we could get there. But I never give up and she just kept on trucking. Those are some tough horses she beat, but she just dug in and fought.”
The final time was 1:24.03 over the Polytrack.
Amiable Grace, who now has four wins, four seconds and one third from 12 career starts, came into the race off a 4 ½-length triumph on May 15, also a seven-furlong Polytrack race.
She paid $19.10, $8.80 and $6.50, combing with D’wild Beach ($23.10, $12.30) for a $384.50 exactor. Rashnaa ($5.90) completed a $1,608.50 triactor. A $1 superfecta returned $3,273.15.
