March 31 – Canada’s Jambalaya has made it two-in-a-row in the Sunshine State.
The five-year-old captured the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Breeders’ Cup on February 24, and on Saturday took the Grade 1, $150,000 Bulleit Bourbon Pan American Handicap over the same turf course, in Hallandale, Florida.
Trained by Catherine Day Phillips and ridden by Javier Castellano, the Kingfield Racing Stable star rated well off the early pace in the 1 ½-mile Pan American, and rallied into the stretch for a half-length victory over late-charging Hotstufanthensome.
Pacesetter Fri Guy was another 2 ¾ lengths back in third in the field of 11. The final time was 2:24:98 over the ‘firm’ course.
