Assiniboia Downs launched its 2025 live racing season on Tuesday, May 13 with a strong opening night that saw a total handle of $1,062,185, signaling a positive start for the iconic prairie track.
Fans were treated to exciting racing with beautiful summer-like weather conditions. A notable change this season is the introduction of lower takeout rates, with all wagering pools now below 20%, giving bettors even more value.
The final race of the evening capped off the card in dramatic fashion as #6 Brody’s Streak at 11-1 came from way behind to surge past the heavy favourite #3 Sawasdee in the final strides to secure the win in a thrilling stretch duel, giving former multiple champion trainer Tom Gardipy Jr. and jockey Rachaad Knights their second win on the evening.
“What a great to start the season tonight,” said Darren Dunn, CEO of Assiniboia Downs. “The weather was unseasonably warm today and it was a perfect night for fans.”
Live racing continues every Tuesday and Wednesday, with select Mondays throughout the season, for a total of 50 live race days in 2025.
