Manitoba’s darling HIDDEN GRACE came off a long layoff on July 1 at Assiniboia Downs and put her unbeaten record on the line in the Canada Day Stakes, but racing-fit MISS IMPERIAL, already a 2-time stakes winner this year, proved to be a tough rival.

On Wednesday night, Miss Imperial pulled away from Hidden Grace to win the 44th Canada Day Stakes for older mares. The former, a Kentucky-bred daughter of MacLean’s Music – Miss Cappy by Skip Trial, was on the pace early in the 7 1/2 furlong race and turned back Hidden Grace to win by a length in 1:33.40 for a 66 Beyer Speed Figure, according to Daily Racing Form.

“Miss Imperial ran a good race,” said 79-year-old Murray Duncan, the man training both Hidden Grace and Miss Imperial. “Hidden Grace is a really nice horse, too, but she just ran out of gas at the end. But it was a good race and both horses did well.”
