Restricted areas of Assiniboia Downs race track – including the race track itself – will be thrown wide open to the public this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the second annual open house, exactly one week before live racing begins.

People will be able to visit the stables, the jockeys’ quarters, the press box, the judges’ stand and even play “horsey” in the starting gate on the track while munching on free dogs, chips and drinks.

Kids should enjoy the opportunity to see and pet exotically-coloured animals at the petting farm and to ride a pony.

Exciting exhibition races will also be run and the whole family will be invited to place free wagers to win valuable merchandise prizes.  Jockeys and trainers will be available to sign autographs and answer questions, too.

“Rain or shine, we’re planning to throw a heck of a party for the whole family,” said Darren Dunn, the direction of operations and track announcer.  “After the success of last year’s open house, we know this is an event that has wide appeal.”  Last year, more than 2,000 came out.

Besides participating in open house activities, visitors will be able to bet on actual races being shown in the newly refurbished Race Book featuring top-notch racing from all over North America.  The Downs recently installed 60” flat-screen TVs that have enhanced the racing experience.  Open, too, as it is all year round, is the casino-style VLT lounge.

Live racing kicks off on Mother’s Day Sunday, May 9 at 1 p.m The 65-day meet runs from May 9 to September 26.
