From the Horseracing BC newsletter, Mike Heads summarizes the BC Cup races at Hastings Racecourse on Monday, August 3.
There were five $50,000 open stakes races on the eight-race card and all the stakes, plus the three supporting races, were won by BC-breds. The handle was an impressive $883,819, with $165,243 coming on track.
Race 1
The first on BC Cup Day was the $50,000 Nursery for two year olds going six furlongs and, proving best, was Swift Thoroughbreds’ TWICKENHAM ($3.10), a son of Pop Artist – Holly’s Last Call by Rosberg bred by Sandra Loseth. The first time starter easily wired the field under Kimal Santo, getting sensible splits (23.81, 46.51) and cruising home a big winner in 1:11.31 for trainer Dino Condilenios. Dino Condilenios, Jordan Froelich, Terry and George Georgopolous’ DEBRUSK ran huge, as well, checking in second despite a wide trip under Silvino Morales in an encouraging debut for trainer Dino Condilenios. The Dino Condilenios trainer Triactor was filed out by Jordan Froelich’s KARENSNOTIMPRESSED, who was in a good position behind the speed throughout and ended up third with Kerron Khelawan in the saddle.
Race 2
The second race featured fillies and mares in the $50,000 BC Cup Distaff and, hitting the line first, was Peter Redekop’s AVANA ($2.10), who raced much closer to the pace on the rail under Amadeo Perez, biding their time waiting for room and, when a narrow opening was available, slicing through with a quick move and drawing clear late for the victory in 1:43.91 for trainer Barbara Heads. Dennis Dale, Morris Peter and Ed Welsh’s AIR FORCE set a very slow tempo (25.04, 49.47, 1:13.88) with Antonio Reyes aboard and they took the lead to the stretch but had to settle for a solid runner-up effort for trainer Keith Pedersen.
Avana is by Vino Rosso 0 Revealing Moment by After Market and she was bred by Bryan and Carol Anderson.
Race 5
The fifth race was the $50,000 BC Cup Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial for 3-year-olds going a mile and a sixteenth and, making it three stakes wins in a row, was Lorie Henson’s RONDELITO ($5.40) who earned a hard-fought triumph. The son of Lent – Vandelita by Street Sense and jockey Kimal Santo was positioned beautifully in third behind a pace battle (23.93, 47.60, 1:12.57). They waited as long as possible to make their move, which proved to be decisive, as they just held to get the win in 1:45.01 for trainer Steve Henson. Stetson Enterprises’ ACCIDENTAL GENIUS after a tardy beginning, was content to be far back off of the early pace under Jose Asencio, before making a menacing move on the stretch turn but just missing and ending up second for trainer Tim Rycroft. Dennis Dale, Morris Peter and Ed Welsh’s COUNTER CAT was gathered up nicely by Amadeo Perez behind the speed, then started to make ground up the inside nearing the far turn, looked to be a danger but lacked clear room in the lane and could only get third money for trainer Keith Pedersen.
Race 6
The sixth race is the BC Cup Hong Kong Jockey Club Handicap for three-year-old fillies saw Wil-a-Way Farm, Gail Jewsbury and Pat Jarvis’ CHI CHI TIME (Finality – Amarchi by Northern Afleet) dominate her rivals as she sped through solid fractions (23.56, 47.20, 1:11.73) and had plenty in reserve under Kuri Powell to win stylishly in 1:43.81 for trainer Pat Jarvis. Jeff Sengara’s SOMEDAY LADY ran another good race under Kerron Khelawan, tracking the speed but was simply second best for conditioner Cindy Krasner. Joe and Gloria Russo’s SAILING FORCE flew late under Amadeo Perez to get third money for trainer Patty Leaney.
Race 7
The seventh race was the $50,000 BC Cup Classic for three year olds and upwards at a mile and a sixteenth and taking home the top prize was Randy Lane and Roy Nelson’s RUN RUDOLF (17.20) who was guided by Silvino Morales to nice spot tracking a quick contested pace (23.31, 46.20, 1:10.34) cruised up the inside at the far turn angled out at the top of the stretch and earned an impressive win I 1:43.01 for trainer Cindy Krasner. The gelding by Pop Artist – Tempered Steel by Tempered Appeal earned an 83 Beyer Speed Figure according to Daily Racing Form.
Dennis Spence’s WHATS SHAKIN was last early under Kimal Santo and proceeded to put in a long sustained wide run to get into the second spot completing a Cindy Krasner trained Exactor. Peter Redekop’s AUGUST RAIN spent the entire trip on the rail under Amadeo Perez but couldn’t make up the needed ground to get near the top two and finished third for Barbara Heads.
