Bear’s Future made his second strong impression in as many starts, taking Sunday’s $153,300 Swynford Stakes at Woodbine. For the Bear Stable charge, the seven-furlong event was his first career stakes score in just his second career start.

Winning jockey Gerry Olguin settled the gray son of Rockport Harbor in third, just off the early pace set by Devilish Stunt and prompted by Something Extra. On the turn, Bear’s Future glided up on the outside of Something Extra and the pair dueled to midstretch. In the final furlong, the undefeated colt prevailed, under the wire a 3 1/2-length winner.

Bear’s Future covered seven furlongs in 1:23.58. Something Extra was second. Whippit was third.

Trainer Reade Baker said the Kentucky-bred colt tipped his hand several days before his 5 3/4-length victory on August 13. “Three weeks before his debut, we breezed him with a bunch of horses. He went pretty fast,” he said. “He’s always been laid back. He’ll do anything you ask.”

Baker said the plan is to stretch Bear’s Future out to 1 1/16 miles for his next start. “We’ll go back in the Grey and see if we can’t go to the big dance with him,” said Baker.

The ‘big dance’ he refers to is the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs on November 7.

Bear’s Future returned $3.10, $2.20 and $2.10, combining with Something Extra ($2.80, $2.10) for a $6 exactor. Whippit ($2.30) rounded out a triactor worth $20.30.
