An Alberta-bred gelding by US sire Sharp Azteca and a Kentucky-bred gelding by 2008 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Big Brown topped the 2024 CTHS Alberta Thoroughbred Sale on September 20 at $33,000 each. The two yearling geldings were among some 70 horses (mostly yearlings) catalogued for the sale at Westerner Park in Red Deer.

Esquirol Farms sold the dark bay youngster by Cigar Mile (G1) winner Sharp Azteca from the Lure mare E. Looe, who is the dam of three stakes-placed horses. Tallie Racing was the buyer.

Cal Britton, agent sold the chestnut son of Big Brown out of Canadian stakes winner Curlish Figure, by Curlin, to Everblack Cattle Co.

The top price for a filly was $32,000 shared by two gals both consigned by Scott Palmer Ranching, Ltd. A dark bay filly by American sire Street Boss from the Macho Uno mare Carmen’s Kiss, was bought by Curits Landry. The filly is a half-sister to two Alberta stakes winners.

Roger Hansen bought the other $32,000 filly, a daughter of US sire Cupid from stakes winner Leena by Cape Canaveral.

The 2024 sale saw an increase in gross sales to $707,000 from $607,800 but the average price for a yearling was down to $12,403 from $14,134 and the media slipped from $10,000 to $9,200.
