Big Races: Mouttet Mile in Jamaica, Stewards Cup in Trinidad

The $300,000 (US) Mouttet Mile is set for Saturday, December 5 at Caymanas Park in Jamaica and the race has gained a bit of human star power recently. Two-time Olympic gold medallist for 100 metres, SHELLY-ANN FRASER PRYCE, is part of the all-women syndicate Cassiopeia Stable which owns RIDEALLDAY, winner of the Port Royal Sprint in his most recent start.

Rideallday is a grey three-year-old colt by Veloma and is a Kentucky-bred who has won six of nine career starts. Top American rider Javier Castellano will ride the colt from post position 11 in the 16-horse. Rideallday is trained by Philip Feanny.

Feanny also saddles SUPERNATURAL POWER with Panamanian Dick Cardenas for owner Colin Karjohn, with whom he had teamed up to win the first Mouttet Mile with EXCESSIVE FORCE in 2022.

Only two native-bred horses, Jamaica Cup comeback hero MOJITO and 2000 Guineas winner SENSATIONAL SOUL, made the Mouttet Mile final cut following the withdrawals of this year’s Jamaica Derby winner, I DREAM AGAIN, and RUN JULIE RUN, last year’s Derby runner-up.

Florida invader NAUTICAL STAR, a graded stakes winner in the U.S. now trained by Anthony Nunes, has been reportedly working quickly and is expected to start as favourite with champion and leading jockey Raddesh Roman. Nautical Star is by Dixie Chatter and the former Saffie Joseph trainee was third in the Oaklawn Mile (G3).

Also in the Mouttet Mile field is last year’s winner FUNCAANDUN and the lightly-raced Into Mischief colt DOTHRAKI, originally a $600,000 Keeneland September Yearling.

In Trinidad & Tobago, the Steward’s Cup will go on Saturday after being postponed from a week ago. The 1200-metre dash has drawn a field of just six including the undefeated Triple Crown winner HEADLINER (Headline News), the good mare SNEAKY CHEEKY (Will Take Charge) and Trinidad’s champion stayer HELLO WORLD (Ten Meropa).
