Brereton Jones homebred Biofuel rallied strongly to capture Sunday’s Grade 3, $254,200 Selene Stakes at Woodbine. For the Kentucky-bred daughter of Stormin Fever, the 1 1/16-mile Selene was her fourth stakes triumph of the season, solidifying her status as the prohibitive favorite for a Sovereign Award as Canada’s top three-year-old filly.
The six-time winner, however, is a longshot to even start at Churchill Downs on November 5 when the continent’s top distaffers face off in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic.
“It’s going to be up to the owner,” said Baker, before rhyming off a few of the cast members set for a collision course in the Breeders’ Cup. “Rachel Alexandra, Blind Luck. Zenyatta may even be there. I think that’s too much of a task for a three-year-old. As a four-year-old, she would be perfect.”
Biofuel was relaxed early and situated over 10 lengths back of an ambitious early pace (:46.83 and 1:11.45) set by Barracks Road. The margin shrunk quickly when she began a quick decisive advance on the second turn.
By the quarter pole, Biofuel was within three or four lengths and travelling beautifully. She seized command inside the eighth pole and prevailed by two lengths over game James Bond trainee Kitty in a Tizzy, who finished 6 3/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Bubble Gum.
“She was very relaxed today. I left her alone,” said winning rider Eurico Rosa da Silva. “The pace was pretty good today. On the first turn, I wasn’t worried. I was very confident.”
Biofuel covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.36.
Earlier this year, the bay filly won the Star Shoot and La Lorgnette Stakes. She entered the Selene, her second career graded score, on the strength of a neck victory in the Belle Mahone against older fillies and mares.
In two trips to New York this summer, Biofuel was third in the Grade 1 Mother Goose and second in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks.
Biofuel boosted her earnings to $780,400.
Baker hinted that the filly deserves Horse of the Year consideration in Canada this year.
“I don’t think there’s been a horse in Canada, in all categories, that has run better than her this year,” affirmed Baker.
Biofuel returned $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10, combining with Kitty in a Tizzy ($6, $3.20) for a $15.10 exactor. Bubble Gum ($3.10) rounded out a triactor worth $65.60. A $1 superfecta returned $68.05.
