The Ice Bucket Challenge is taking the sporting world by storm as athletes of all types join the campaign to raise awareness for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
On Wednesday night, Jeff ‘Skippy’ Bowen, an assistant trainer for Ian Black, joined the ranks with the help of top jockeys Emma-Jayne Wilson and Gerry Olguin.
“It’s a fun way to raise awareness for a great cause and it’s something everyone can do,” said Bowen.
The internet phenomenon was started by University of Arizona women’s basketball coach Niya Butts in hopes of raising awareness and money for breast cancer research. The challenge was then adopted to raise awareness for ALS by former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates.
One of the key components of the challenge, in addition to being soaked by a bucket of ice water, is to ask friends and family to take the challenge by nominating them before the dousing.
Bowen has nominated Penelope Miller, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s Senior Manager of Digital Media; Will Wong, a prominent racing fan who chronicles celebrity lifestyle on MrWillWong.Com; and Woodbine’s on-track racing analyst Dawn Lupul.
“I wanted to nominate people in the racing community with a large outreach on social media who would be brave enough to take the challenge,” said Bowen.
