Woodbine turf winner and Ontario-bred RISING STAR (Ghostzapper – Purple Trillium by Seeking the Gold) is one of 17 nominees to the March 7 Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup, the most famous race in the Caribbean.
Raced last year for Zilli Racing and trainer Mike DePaulo, Rising Star won a 1 1/8 mile turf race to break his maiden last summer following a good effort when third in the Plate Trial Stakes. He finished ninth in the Plate before his maiden win. He later finished sixth in the 1 1/2 mile Breeders’ Stakes when on the turf. The winner that day was Tone Broke.
Rising Star, originally a $325,000 yearling purchase and claimed by Zilli Racing for $40,000 last winter, was claimed from his final Woodbine outing in 2019 by Barbadian Nicholas Gibbs and Sylvester Olivierre. The owners listed on his nomination for is Legends of Racing, the 4-year-old will represent Barbados should be compete.
The Barbados Turf Club announced that of the seventeen horses which have been nominated at the first stage of nominations for the 39th running of the SANDY LANE BARBADOS GOLD CUP, one is from the USA, two out of Trinidad, one from Antigua and three from the newest racing jurisdiction in the Caribbean, St. Lucia.
Local owners invested in new racing stock in a bid to keep the coveted cup at home. The new horses arrived on the island from the USA on Friday 10th. They are JUNIPERO AVENUE and RISING STAR who will represent Barbados.
Scheduled to arrive in mid-February from the powerful Sir David Seale stable and trained by Barbadian Saffie Joseph Jr. 2019 Champion Trainer and current leader at Gulfstream Park is the already highly favoured RENAISANCE FROLIC.
The son of Paynter is a stakes winner who has Beyer Figures in the 80s and low 90s and was a recent three-time winner, in succession, in the fall of 2019.
