The Jockey Club of Canada announced Feb. 18 that there will be 40 Canadian graded stakes run in 2022 while releasing the results of its graded stakes committee’s annual review.
This is down one graded race from 2021. Several graded races put on hold last year remain on hiatus: the Northern Dancer Stakes (G1T), Nijinsky Stakes (G2T), and Play the King Stakes (G2T).
The Grade 1 Pattison Canadian International (G1T) was placed on hold in 2020 during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, returned in 2021 but will be placed on hold again. Pattison is sponsoring the Grade 1 Summer Stakes in 2022.
Returning in 2022 is the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes for 4-year-olds and upward at 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta at Woodbine.
The committee reviewed the North American Race Committee (NARC) figures and the Race Quality Scores (RQS) for all of the graded stakes races in Canada. In general, the evaluation indicated slight declines in the performance of most graded stakes races across Canada. These numbers will remain on historical record and were used to upgrade, downgrade, or place on watch any individual races. Although 2020 was recognized as an anomalous year, the 2021 NARC figures and RQS numbers were reviewed and analyzed according to historical standards. The committee is, however, fully aware of the possibility that some effects of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-21 may continue in the future.
