Norm McKnight sent out two winners at Oaklawn Park on February 7, bringing his total in 2025 to four and drawing him within 13 victories of 1,000 for his career.
Like other Oaklawn horsepeople, McKnight has missed many racing opportunities at Oaklawn this winter due to nasty weather including heavy snow.
But last week he had two Ontario-breds win nicely at the Arkansas track. DELPHIA, by Mucho Macho Man, led all the way to win a $12,500 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles under jockey Tyler Bacon. The five-year-old mare is owned by Knightquest Stables and Carmelo Scime. This was the fourth win in her last seven races and it was her first win on a dirt track. Delphia earned a 75 Beyer Speed Figure for her time of 1:45.22.
A few races later, McKnight won with Bruno Schickedanz’s DOUBLE RIDE, an Ontario-bred three-year-old colt by Candy Ride (Arg). This fellow was winning his maiden in his ninth career start and his second outing for Schickedanz and McKnight. The fast colt led all the way to win the $30,000 claiming maiden race with a 66 Beyer Speed Figure for 6 furlongs in 1:11.71.
Also at Oaklawn, on Feb. 3 Ontario-bred BEDARD (Nyquist), recently purchased by Americans Flurry Racing Stables, Mark Schlesinger and Corey Smith, won an allowance race at 1 1/8 miles with an 83 Beyer Figure. The Anderson Farms Ont., Inc. four-year-old gelding was third in the Prince of Wales as a maiden, then won at Keeneland for trainer Kevin Attard and the X-Men Racing et al. He was bought by his current interests at the 2024 Keeneland November Mixed Sale for $210,000. Brad Cox is his current trainer.
Canadian breeders IVAN AND COLLEEN DALOS of Tall Oaks Farm were no doubt impressed by the win at Oaklawn by their Kentucky-bred colt AUTHENTIC GALLOP on Feb. 7. The colt is owned by Greenwell Thoroughbreds and he won an allowance race at 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.85 for an 84 Beyer Figure.
Authentic Gallop is by Kentucky Derby winner Authentic and from Outstanding Broodmare in Canada Galloping Ami, whose four-year-old Kopion is is two-time graded stakes winner this year.
Woodbine’s leading rider SAHIN CIVACI injured his back recently pre-race at Aqueduct in New York and will be off for this week. Civaci, who is 15 for 88 in his first session at Aqueduct, was also called in by the stewards for not riding out a horse to the wire, according to a report in Daily Racing Form.
Camhaven Farms and trainer Steve Flint won their second race of the year at Fair Grounds when It’s Just Money won his maiden on Jan. 31 in a 6 furlong dirt dash. It’s Just Money ran a 69 Beyer Figure in his gritty score. He is a son of Sky Mesa.
On Feb. 9 at Gulfstream, Ontario-bred EXECUTIVE SUCCESS won her maiden for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. for $50,000 claiming. The daughter of Souper Speedy – Birsay was bred by Jennifer Leuty. The filly earned a 74 Beyer Figure for 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04 and she was claimed by A. Bianco Holding Limited and trainer Martin Drexler.
Trainer MIKE DEPAULO will start stakes winner Tito’s Calling in a turf allowance race on Feb. 15 at Gulfstream. DePaulo sits at 999 wins in his career and Tito’s Calling will be his 14th starter of the meeting. Another Woodbine trainer seeking a first win of 2025 at Gulfstream is Bill Tharrenos, who has had 21 starters with five seconds and thirds.
