Breeders and prospective buyers of Canadian-bred yearlings at the August 31 Canadian Premier Yearling sale at the Woodbine pavilion are hoping for good luck as 185 youngsters (including 23 scratches) are up for auction.

You can view the interactive catalogue here.

All eyes will be on the hope that buyers will be out in full force and that breeders and consignors get fair prices for yearlings. The 2021 average was $20,028 and this will be the first auction since 2019 in which there are no restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Already spotted on the sale grounds was the continent’s premier bloodstock agent, Donato Lanni, whose X-Men Racing syndicate won the Queen’s Plate with their filly Moira. Moira was a $150,000 purchase at the 2020 Keeneland September Sale from consignor and breeder Adena Springs. Indeed, Canadian/Ontario-bred yearlings up for sale in US auctions are beginning to cost a pretty penny, so the locals have a good chance to get an affordable youngster at Woodbine this week.

Recent yearling sale graduates include this year’s Grade 3 Bold Venture Stakes winner SECRET RESERVE, an $8,000 purchase in 2019 and a son of Giant Gizmo. THE MINKSTER, winner of the Queenston Stakes, was a $45,000 buy in 2020 and last weekend’s four yearling sales stakes winners, TALK TO YA LATER, ANAM CARA, GRAN SPIRITED and FULL SCREEN all cost less than $40,000, three of them less than $10,000.

Among the offerings are siblings to champions Summer Sunday, Pender Habour, and Academic, among other top horses.

The sale gets underway at 12 noon.
