Renewed optimism in the Ontario Thoroughbred Breeding and Racing program continued with positive results in the Open Session of the Canadian Premier Yearling sale. While the Tuesday Select Session saw the majority of horses passing through the Auction ring, there were lovely individuals of interest during the Open Session.

The Open Session sale topper was a gray filly by Sligo Bay (IRE), out of the With Approval mare, Kiamika, selling for $57,000. Consigned by Woodlands (Gail Wood), Agent, the filly was purchased by Morgan Racing.

Runner up was a Philanthropist filly out of the Pine Bluff mare, Charming Story. This chestnut filly, consigned by Woodlands (Gail Wood), Agent for Minshall Farms was purchased by Ian Black, Agent for $37,000.

Rounding out the top three was a chestnut colt by Singing Saint out of the Perigee Moon mare, Paradise Cat. Consigned by Ballycroy Training Centre, Agent was purchased by Mark Frostad, Agent for $27,000.

The Open Session resulted in sales of $461,000, an increase of 35.9%. With a smaller catalogue of 59 yearlings sold, the average selling price of $7,814 reflects a stellar increase of 72.8%. The median was $4,500, a full 50% greater than in 2013.
