The yearling market continued strongly at the recently completed Fasig-Tipton October Sale in Lexington, Kentucky and Canadians were busy on the selling and buying front.

The four-day sale saw 1,100 yearlings change hands for a record $55,426,500, up 5.4% over the previous record gross set last year when 1,153 yearlings sold for $52,607,500. The average was $50,338, eclipsing by 10.4% the record set last year at $45,627. The median rose 13.6% to a record $25,000 from the $22,000 benchmark set in 2021. One-hundred-fifty-six (156) yearlings sold for $100,000 or more, up from 140 sold at or above that price in 2021. The RNA rate was 18.7%.

Thursday’s final session was topped by a $700,000 Gun Runner filly and the second-highest price of the day was an Ontario-bred Uncle Mo filly from Pearl Turn by Bernardini. Bred and sold by David Anderson’s Anderson Farms, the filly brought a bid of $485,000 from Lauren Carlisle, agent. The yearling filly is a three-quarter sister to Champion 2-Year-Old and Grade 1 winner Gretzky the Great.

Bernard McCormack’s Cara Bloodstock sold an Ontario-bred Munnings – Druidess filly for $120,000 earlier this week.

Among the Canadian buyers at the October sale was Richard Hogan, agent, who bought an Ontario-bred Flintshire – Game filly for $30,000 for Colebrook Farms.  The filly was bred by Sean Fitzhenry. Another Fitzhenry-bred, a Mr. Speaker filly from Gilded Splinters, was bought by owner/trainer Ted Holder for $10,000. Holder has won 10 races in 2022, matching his career best total.

Fitzhenry also sold an Astern (Aus) filly out of Morilles (GB) for $50,000 to Ray and Debbie Burke’s Sea Glass Stable. The Burkes race stakes winner The Minkster at Woodbine.

Keith Johns, owned of True North Stable, has had a memorable year with his filly Hazelbrook, a multiple stakes winner at Woodbine this season, and he doled out $70,000 for an Ontario-bred Twirling Candy out of Holy Flame, offered by Hill ‘n’ Dale at Zalapa. Agent Jeff Bloom bought the yearling for Johns as agent.

Agent Donato Lanni’s Canuck Racing Club 1 has purchased several yearlings at various sales this fall. At Fasig-Tipton, the new ownership group bought a Danish Dynaformer – Morning Tale Ontario-bred for $30,000 from breeder Charles Fipke and an Old Forester – American Armada colt from Minshall Farms for $42,000.
