Amid another challenging time in Canadian horse racing and breeding, this time due to COVID-19, Canadian owners and breeders are still picking up horses to add to their stable. On the third day of the 2021 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale another group of mares, yearlings and others were purchased by the northern set. (For other results see the Jan. 12 post on Canadian Thoroughbred).

ROBERT MARZILLI’S ZILLI RACING stepped up and paid $120,000 for the Uncle Mo mare MO EMMA, who is an unraced 3-year-old out of Grade 1 winner American Cleopatra, who is in turn a full sister to the great AMERICAN PHAROAH. Mo Emma sold as a broodmare prospect. Marzilli raced Horse of the Year Caren and has been putting together a strong racing and breeding operation in the few years he has been in the industry.

Glen Todd’s NORTH AMERICAN HORSE COMPANY picked up AUNT SALLY, an Uncle Mo mare from Heart of Grace (Exploit) for $25,000. This 8-year-old mare did not race but is a half-sister to Grade 3 Canadian Derby winner Edison and stakes placed Graceful Heart. Aunt Sally is in foal to premier sire Distorted Humor.
