Amid another challenging time in Canadian horse racing and breeding, this time due to COVID-19, Canadian owners and breeders are still picking up horses to add to their stable. On the third day of the 2021 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale another group of mares, yearlings and others were purchased by the northern set. ROBERT MARZILLI’S ZILLI RACING stepped up and paid $120,000 for the Uncle Mo mare MO EMMA, who is an unraced 3-year-old out of Grade 1 winner American Cleopatra, who is in turn a full sister to the great AMERICAN PHAROAH. Mo Emma sold as a broodmare prospect. Marzilli raced Horse of the Year Caren and has been putting together a strong racing and breeding operation in the few years he has been in the industry.

Glen Todd’s NORTH AMERICAN HORSE COMPANY picked up AUNT SALLY, an Uncle Mo mare from Heart of Grace (Exploit) for $25,000. This 8-year-old mare did not race but is a half-sister to Grade 3 Canadian Derby winner Edison and stakes placed Graceful Heart. Aunt Sally is in foal to premier sire Distorted Humor.

Todd also paid $5,000 for a short yearling by Wicked Strong and who is a half-brother to Grade 3 Gotham Stakes winner Mischevious Alex, a recent winner at Gulfstream Park.

Hall of Fame trainer and bloodstock agent READE BAKER has bought two mares at the past two sessions including CC’s Joy for $18,000 for Toronto’s Jesse Korona (see the Tuesday news on CT). On Wednesday, Baker bought J AND J O’SHEA for $31,000 for American owner Paul Braverman. Baker is familiar with this daughter of Sky Mesa – Gold Strike as her dam was his trainee when she was Champion 3-year-old filly in Canada in 2005. J and J O’Shea is in foal to Enticed (Medaglia D’Oro).

COLE BENNETT, as agent and an owner and trainer at Woodbine, has been busy at the sale and on Wednesday bought a 2-year-old by Goldencents – Roo Dew by Orientate for $3,000 as a racing prospect. She was foaled in Indiana.

NICK NOSOWENKO paid $4,500 for the broodmare prospect SADLERS DELITE, a 5-year-old by Mineshaft out of a Sadler’s Wells mare.

Retired jockey SLADE CALLAGHAN, whose wife Kelly owns and trains at Woodbine, paid $45,000 for a yearling colt by Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) from the unraced Tapit mare New Narration.

Ontario-based owner and trainer ROBERT SIMONICK and PAULA LOESCHER bought the gelding MUTAMALIQ for $9,000 from the large Shadwell consignment of horses of racing age. Mutamaliq is an unraced 3-year-old by Midshipman from the winning Street Cry (Ire) mare Nabadaat.
