Some Canadians have been buying and selling horses at the current Keeneland November sale which continues through mid-week in Lexington.
Through seven sessions of the November Breeding Stock Sale, the gross sales are $146,419,700 for 1,575 horses, for an average of $92,965, a median of $42,000, and an RNA rate of 18.9%. The gross total for the sale at the same point in 2019 was $184,406,800 for 1,664 horses, with a $110,821 average, a $50,000 median, and an RNA rate of 21.2%.
Retired Hall of Fame trainer READE BAKER has been busy buying mares for Paul Braverman, Henley Thoroughbreds and Ontario breeder Jesse Korona.
For American owner Braverman, Baker bought IN JAIL, an Into Mischief mare out of Grade winner Yaya, for $75,000 in foal to Catholic Boy (More Than Ready).
Mario Forgione’s HENLEY THOROUGHBREDS’ new mare is stakes winner TRAVIEZA, by Into Mischief, who cost $80,000. She is carrying her first foal by Munnings.
JESSE KORONA, who won his first race as an owner in 2019 soon after embarking into horse racing, bought BELETRIX for $40,000 and she is a Giant’s Causeway mare in foal to Omaha Beach. From Toronto, Korona is a fitness trainer and owner of Target Training.
Korona also purchased BAREFOOT NATIVE (Greyday) for $12,000 in foal to Lord Nelson (Pulpit). On Nov. 15 he bought stakes-placed GRANT PARK, an Action This Day mare from stakes winner Fickle Fate, in foal to The Factor for $10,000.
DON and BETH BLOWE and partner JORY SHERMAN, fresh off the sale of a $200,000 Kentucky-bred Cupid colt at Keeneland September, spent some of that money to buy two mares during the seventh session, Sunday Nov. 15.
The owners have raced horses at Woodbine but not for about 6 years. The Blowes daughter is former broadcaster, Fort Erie communications manager and accomplished horseperon Elissa Blowe, currently working for nutrition specialist Mad Barn.
The Blowes and Sherman paid $25,000 for the mare MRS. AWESOME, by Awesome Again, who is a half sister to Grade 2 winner Sporting Art. Mrs. Awesome is in foal to Take Charge Indy. They also bought PRINCELY SUM, a Lemon Drop Kid mare out of stakes-winning Sadler’s Wells mare Honoria (Ire) who is the dam of stakes winner Maximova. Princely Sum is in foal to Exaggerator.
GLENN SIKURA, AGENT bought CAROLINE THE GREAT for $50,000. The stakes placed Into Mischief mare is out of champion filly Catch the Thrill and is in foal to MacLean’s Music.
TRACK WEST RACING INC. paid $27,000 for FREEDOM QUEST, a Pioneerofthe Mile mare in foal to MacLean’s Music.
KANNY NG, whose filly Penetanguishene won her maiden at Woodbine on Saturday, bought a 3-year-old filly by Bernardini named Rasees who was offered as a racing or broodmare prospect.
During Sunday’s seventh session Anthony Russo’s TARA HORSE FARM bought a $3,500 weanling filly by Del Mar Futurity winner Klimt and bought back, for $10,000, its Ontario-bred weanling filly by California Chrome – My Guardian Angel by Indian Ocean.
MARY ELLEN BIAMONTE bought a weanling, Klimt’s Hope, by Klimt for $8,000 and the colt is a half-brother to Woodbine winner Ninth Symphony.
