Toronto – Josie Carroll became the first female trainer to win a Queen’s Plate when Edenwold scored in the 2006 edition of the race.
What she’ll wholly accomplish in 2007 is still to be determined, but she’s off to a good start after winning two races on the Opening Day card of the Woodbine Thoroughbred racing season on Saturday.
Carroll saddled the winner of the season’s first race, Hello Haley ($7.40) and the afternoon’s featured event, race 6, the $79,900 Jacques Cartier Prep, with Vibank ($8.80).
“Winning the first race of the season – what a great way to start the year,” said Carroll, of winning the lid-lifter with Hello Haley. “This filly wintered (in New Orleans) and it certainly benefited her.”
David Clark rode both of the Carroll horses to their victories.
Emile Ramsammy, who partnered Edenwold in his Queen’s Plate win, is also off to a good start in 2007 with two wins. Archers Dream paid $7.80 to win in the fourth, while Timely Closure ($15.10) was a 10 1/4-length winner in the fifth.
Corey Fraser, Richard Dos Ramos, Emma-Jayne Wilson, Dean Deverell, Robbie King Jr. and Justin Stein also rode winners on the card.
Trainers Reade Baker, Paul Attard, Ross Armata, Abraham Katryan, Tom Bowden, John Cardella, Debra Rombis and David Cotey collected victories as well on the 10-race program.
