Alberta-bred BAR NO Q, owned by Bar None Ranches and Barrie and Collin Quamme, upset the apple cart in the $100,000 Harvest Plate at Century Downs on Thanksgiving Monday.

Trained by Ron Grieves, the son of Gayego – Q Tee Q by Honour and Glory, bred by the Quammes, chased a hot pace in the seven furlong dash on dirt and took the lead in the stretch. He held off top stakes horse Trooper John, who made the first bid and then Sir Bronx, who had a troubled run.

Sent off at 57 to 1 despite having won the Red Diamond Express Stakes at 12 to 1 last month, Bar No Q won by 1 1/4 lengths and paid $116.80 to win. He was ridden to victory by Quincy Welch and he raced the 7 furlongs in 1:23.

An Alberta-bred son of Gayego, Bar No Q is trained by Ron Grieves and races for Barrie and Collin Quamme and Bar None Ranches.

The gelding has won four of 27 races and has earned $161,587.

It was a favourite, SMART FIX, who got up to edge a longshot in the $50,000 Lynn Chouinard Founders Distaff earlier in the day at Century Downs. The Alberta-bred, 6-year-old mare by Kissin Kris – Char’s Still Here by Grindstone won the 1 1/16 miles race by three-quarters of a length over 45 to 1 Port Protection. Rigo Sarmiento, currently leading the short, Century Downs meeting, rode the winner.

The final time was 1:45.80. The mare has won seven of 32 races and over $229,000. She is owned by  Douglas Hardy, Leanne Chiodo, Judy Frost and Jerri Robertson and trained by Robertson.
