Toronto, ON – Biofuel rallied from last to first in Sunday’s $167,800 La Lorgnette Stakes at Woodbine.
The Reade Baker trainee unleashed a determined rally from the quarter-pole to the wire to win by a length in a time of 1:45.49 for 1 1/16 miles.
Canadian-breds Ernfold and Moment of Majesty finished second and third, respectively, in the open stakes event and are eligible to compete in next month’s $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, presented by Budweiser.
Seventh into the first turn, Biofuel remained in touch with the group, settling less than four lengths off very slow fractions (:25.34 and :50.21). Asked for run entering the second turn, the Kentucky-bred responded with a serious turn of foot.
Winning jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva said Biofuel is a classy filly. “I was very confident I was riding the best horse. I was just asking her to be patient,” he said. “She was just breezing (in the stretch). She’s a great horse.”
On the strength of a victory in last year’s Mazarine Stakes and a troubled fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, the homebred daughter of Stormin Fever was voted last year’s champion two-year-old filly in Canada. So far in 2010, she is a perfect 2-for-2.
Biofuel returned $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10, combining with Ernfold ($3, $2.60) for a $6.90 exactor. Moment of Majesty ($3.30) rounded out a $28.80 triactor.
