The first running of the overnight race the Hamilton Stakes at Woodbine on August 6, worth $100,000, had a 1-2-3 finish for Mark Casse trainees, all of whom were shipped in for the race. The 7 1/2 furlong Hamilton Stakes is for three-year-olds and the winner was favoured CONMAN (Constitution – Rare Medal by Medaglia d’Oro) who sat a perfect trip behind a speed battle with Patrick Husbands riding before going on to a 3 1/4-length score. He ran the distance on the inner turf in near-track record time – 1:28.45 and earned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure.

It was a 1-2 finish for D.J. Stables which owns the winner as its Lifetime of Chance was second over Eyes On the King. D.J. Stable purchased Conman for $300,000 at the New York-bred yearling sale in 2021.

Conman was bred by Toronto’s John Fielding and Fred Hertrich.

For Canadian pedigree buffs, Conman’s fourth dam is champion NORTHERNETTE.

Ontario-bred RAPID TEST collected more than $66,000 for winning an allowance/optional claiming race ($50,000) for Kingfield Farm and Apricot Valley Thoroughbreds. The son of Souper Speedy – Arch Tigress by Archarcharch, trained by Catherine Day Phillips, was 9-to-1 under Kazushi Kimura. It was the gelding’s second win his fourth race. Bred by Joey Gee Thoroughbreds, Rapid Test was scooped up from the 2021 CTHS Ontario yearling sale for $22,000 and he has earnings of just over $100,000.

IT’S A FLUKE crushed maidens on the grass for $40,00 claiming on Sunday, winning by more than six lengths in the seven furlong event for Foxcroft Racing Stable and Martin and Vicky Earle. The Ontario-bred by Carpe Diem – Jademare is trained by Darwin Banach and was bred by Robert Marzilli. Rafael Hernandez rode the winner, his fifth win of the week, and that has brought him within 10 of Kazushi Kimura on the leading riders’ list.

THE GREAT OZ is one of the more improved horses on the grounds this year and the grey gelding, owned by TEC Stable and trained by Martin Drexler, roared to a 4 1/2 length win in an optional claiming race in :123.45 for 7 furlongs. He earned an 83 Beyer Speed Figure according to Daily Racing Form. The son of Liam’s Map was winning for the second straight time this season. Sahin Cibaci rode. This was the 35th winner of the meeting for Drexler, Woodbine’s second-leading trainer.

The first race on Sunday was won by the aptly named UNEXPECTED OUTCOME (Ire) who won the $7,500 maiden claiming race at odds of 16 to 1. An Florida auction purchase this past winter, the gelding, owned by Ralph Murray and trained by Greg Cox, broke sharply was close to the front runner, and then darted up the rail early. He led the rest of the way under Leo Salles. In his previous race at the same class level and distance, Unexpected Outcome was seventh, beaten 27 lengths at 3-to-1 with a bit of trouble.

The cleverly named JUMBOTRON won his maiden in an optional event on Sunday in just his second career start. The two-year-old by Big Screen – Miss Brown Sugar by Big Brown edged first-time starter Country Living to win the six furlong dash at 16-to-1. Trained by Sid Attard for Janice Attard and Lou Tucci, Jumbotron was purchased from last year’s CTHS Ontario yearling sale for about $25,000 (Can). He has a full sister in this year’s sale on Aug. 30, consigned by breeder Spring Farm.
