Jockey Luis Contreras, currently leading the Woodbine standings, won his 200th and 201st races of the campaign, guiding Frank Di Giulio’s undefeated three-year-old filly Anywhere to victory in Friday afternoon’s seventh race and Mr. Monty to a triumph in the eighth.
Contreras, who won the 2011 Woodbine Oaks and Queen’s Plate with Inglorious, as well as the Prince of Wales and Breeders’ Stakes with Pender Harbour, became just the second rider in the history of the Toronto oval to reach the 200-win mark. The record for most wins in one Woodbine meet is 221, held by Mickey Walls, who achieved the feat in 1991.
“I’m very happy with how the year has gone and very grateful for the support of the trainers, owners, my family and my agent,” said Contreras. “I would also like to thank the horses, too. I’ve been lucky to ride so many great ones.”
Contreras, who began riding at Woodbine in 2009, ranked fourth in last year’s standings. The native of Mexico has seven racing days left to notch the record.
Anywhere, trained by Bob Tiller, paid $3.50 for the win in the six-furlong Polytrack race. Mr. Monty, also conditioned by Tiller, paid $11.80 in the six-furlong ‘Poly’ race.
Racing continues on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. Contreras has seven mounts on the 10-race card.
