Jockey Luis Contreras, who recently became just the second rider in the history of Woodbine to win 200 races in one meet, recorded another impressive feat, most purse earnings in a Woodbine season, a mark he set on Thursday afternoon.
Contreras, who won the 2011 Woodbine Oaks and Queen’s Plate with Inglorious, as well as the Prince of Wales and Breeders’ Stakes with Pender Harbour, has $11,287,783 in earnings to date, surpassing Todd Kabel’s mark of $11,284,853, set in 2003, when he finished fourth in Thursday’s seventh race aboard Salty Langfuhn.
The native of Mexico is also attempting a late bid to best Mickey Walls’ seasonal record for wins (221, established in 1991) at the Toronto oval. He has 208 victories after today’s card.
“This year has been amazing,” said Contreras, who began riding at Woodbine in 2009, ranking fourth in last year’s standings. “There are so many things to be thankful for, including all of the people that have supported me. I feel very lucky to ride at Woodbine and I hope next year can be even better.”
Racing continues on Friday, starting at 1 p.m. Contreras has eight mounts on the 10-race card.
