An interesting maiden special weight race at Keeneland on April 12 had two Ontario-bred three-year-old fillies in the field, including one who had attracted plenty of buzz.
The 1 1/16 mile turf race, the third race of the day, had a field of 12 with highly-regarded HIBISCUS drawing post one for LNJ Foxwoods and trainer Josie Carroll. An Ontario-bred by Constitution, Hibiscus was bet down to 3-to-1 second-favourite with Manny Franco on board.
In post 5 was Roger Attfield’s homebred DOUBLE VELOCITY, a daughter of Accelerate (Lookin at Lucky), the Breeders’ Cup Classic winner of 2016 from Attfield’s own mare Double Guns Girl, a half-sister to champion Breaking Lucky.
From the start it was Hibiscus who was eager to go, tugging on her rider early and going quickly on the pace, 22.60 and 46.80. Double Velocity and Jose Ortiz were some 10 lengths behind early in the race before they began to move around the last turn.
Hibiscus faded along the inside, and a number of fillies battled for the lead before Double Velocity, a three quarter sister in blood to Breaking Lucky, Prince of Wales Stakes winner in 2015, burst between rivals to win by 1 1/2 lengths at 18-to-1.
Vicki Oliver saddled the filly for Attfield. Double Velocity’s time of 1:44.34 was good for a 74 Beyer Speed Figure.
Of course, Double Velocity is eligible for the Woodbine Oaks and King’s Plate. Attfield has won a record-tying eight Plates. He is to receive the E.P. Taylor Award of Merit at the April 24 Sovereign Awards.
Attfield has had several nice runners out of Double Guns Girl, a daughter of the great Langfuhr. Her second foal, Gun Society (Society’s Chairman) won the 2019 South Ocean Stakes and earned over $209,000. She was sold in foal to Omaha Beach for $75,000 and that foal, a filly, is two years old this year.
Grey Society was a winner and sold for $10,000 as a broodmare prospect in 2023 to Desiree Devries. Grey Society’s first foal is a 2024 filly by Independence Hall that sold for $4,000.
Twowaycrossing, a foal of 2020, won his career debut and has shown plenty of promise. He races this week for Attfield.
Double Guns Girl’s two-year-old of 2025 is Starship Salute, sold for $110,000 last fall. The colt is by Mitole and was bought by John E. Russell.
