Jeff Smith’s SEE THE FIRE (GB) is a top class mare from England who has won a couple of Group 2’s but has not been lucky to win a Group 1 just yet.
She has a big chance to accomplish that feat at Woodbine in Sept. 12 when she competes in the 10 furlong E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1) with jockey Rob Hornby.
Recently third in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, See the Fire won the Group 2 Middleton Stakes for the second consecutive year on May 14.
Trainer Andrew Balding has done well when he brings horses to Woodbine. He saddled PHOENIX REACH to win the Canadian International in 2003, BLOND ME to win the Taylor in 2017 and New Century to win the Summer Stakes in 2024.
This year’s E.P. Taylor has eight entrants and all are ridden by American or European riders. Godolp[hin and Charlie Appleby will have the likely favourite DIAMOND RAIN (GB) who missed winning last year’s Taylor by a head to American star She Feels Pretty. Diamond Rain has met See the Fire once and the latter won that day by two lengths.
JANCIS (IRE), orphaned at the age of two days, is a Group 2 winner who has been chasing the top mare from France, Blue Bolt, in recent months. Blue Bolt deefated Jancis in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket in England and that winner has won the Group 1 Prix Rothschild since then.
The lone local entrant in the Taylor is SULTANA, trained by Kevin Attard who won the Grade 3 Orchid Stakes in March at GUlfstream but has been on the edges in her last two stakes starts.
