It has been a pretty great year for Ontario breeder David Anderson. The St. Thomas, ON, horseman sold a $1.6 million Medaglia D’oro filly in September and has watched horses bred by his Anderson Farms win major races throughout North America.

Coming up in one week, the Anderson bred 2-year-old colt GRETZKY THE GREAT will compete in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Keeneland.

This past week Anderson sold a bay colt by Quality Road from Gretzky the Great’s dam Pearl Turn (by Bernardini) at the Fasig-Tipton October sale for $560,000 to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. Eclipse owns a share in ‘Gretzky’.
Anderson also sold a colt by Nyquest (sire of Gretzky the Great) from Reason, by Quiet American for $150,000. The buyer listed was Abe Froman.

The Quality Road colt, a June foal, was saved for the later sale by Anderson.

“We pointed this horse to this sale because he was a June foal and we just wanted to give him some more time,” Anderson told Thoroughbred Daily News. “We were hoping that his brother would continue to do well and the stars were aligned.”

Anderson purchased Pearl Turn for $310,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. Now 10, the mare was multiple stakes-placed while earning $182,560 on the racetrack.

“At the time, I didn’t realize that Bernardini was going to go on and be as good a broodmare sire as he is,” Anderson told TDN. “That was just a plus. But she comes from an old Calumet family that my dad had a couple of mares out of and that family meant a lot to me. The mare could really run, though it didn’t show it on paper, but she had a lot of ability. Any time you can find a mare bred like her that had a lot of ability, you’ve got to take advantage of it.”

Pearl Turn is currently in foal to Uncle Mo.

Harlequin Ranches bought a Classic Empire colt from Silsita, by Macho Uno from Jay and Christine Hayden’s Saintsbury Farms, Inc. through agent Cara Bloodstock for $60,000. Harlequin, owned by Dick Bonnycastle, has not raced a horse since 2017 but had one partnership horse race in early 2019.
