Chiefswood Stable’s Niigon’s Touch was given a patient ride from Tyler Pizarro, resulting in an impressive victory in Saturday’s $125,000 Eternal Search Stakes at Woodbine.
In the Eternal Search, her third consecutive stakes appearance, Niigon’s Touch, a daughter of 2004 Queen’s Plate winner Niigon, was fifth in the six-horse field (L’Avenue was scratched) through fractions of :24.65, :48.80 and 1:13-flat.
Five horses set their sights on top prize as the field straightened for home, but it was Niigon’s Touch, who was second, by a head, to Bear It’s Time in the Bison City Stakes on July 3, and fifth to Marketing Mix in the Wonder Where Stakes on July 31, that was full of run.
A game Lucky Be Me, at 27-1, was second, while Bear It’s Time was third.
Niigon’s Touch covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.86.
“She ran quite spotty,” said trainer Paul Attard, of the Wonder Where effort which was contested over a ‘firm’ E.P. Taylor Turf Course. “She broke sharply, dropped back and came back again. She wasn’t comfortable on it.”
Today, that was hardly an issue for the Chiefswood homebred.
“A nice filly like this, I usually like to give her a little more time (three weeks since the Wonder Where) than that, but we’re going to give her a little break after this race. That was the plan, win or lose today. She definitely deserves it now.”
Niigon’s Touch paid $5.40, $3.90 and $2.70, combining with Lucky Be Me ($19, $5.80) for a $119.70 exactor. Bear It’s Time ($2.30) completed a $214.30 triactor.
