The Jockey Club of Canada has released the finalists for the 2021 Sovereign Awards honouring Canada’s champions and recognizing their outstanding achievements in Canadian Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding. The winners of the twelve horse categories and the five human categories will be announced at the 47th Annual Sovereign Awards Ceremony that will be held in April 2022.

Last year’s racing stars included MIGHTY HEART, nominated as Champion Older Male Main Track, and PINK LLOYD, also a finalist in that category as well as Champion Sprinter, an award he has won four other times.

AMALFI COAST, who raced for breeders Terra Racing before being sold at auction. is a finalist in three categories: Champion Older Mare Main Track, Female Sprinter and Turf Female.

Ontario-sired LORENA is a finalist in two categories, 3-year-old filly and Female Sprinter and AVIE’S FLATTER (Turf, Male Sprinter) is also a double finalist.

Western Canadian stars UNCHARACTERISTIC (3-Year-Old Colt) and INFINITE PATIENCE (Older Mare Main Track) are finalists.

Two categories show four finalists which indicates a tie for third in the voting.

Trainers KEVIN ATTARD, JOSIE CARROLL, and MARK CASSE are up for the Outstanding Trainer for the second consecutive year.

Breeders who made the final three are SAM-SON FARMS, IVAN DALOS and ADENA SPRINGS. Owner finalists are all American including GARY BARBER, LIVE OAK, and GODOLPHIN.

Four jockeys are finalists- KAZUSHI KIMURA, RAFAEL HERNANDEZ, JUSTIN STEIN and PATRICK HUSBANDS.

Horse of the Year

The Horse of the Year finalists will be announced during the 47th Annual Sovereign Awards Ceremony on April 14, 2022 at Universal Eventspace in Vaughan, Ontario.

The 2021 Media Awards finalists, the winner of the Award for Outstanding Groom and this year’s E. P. Taylor Award and Special Sovereign Award winners will be announced on or before February 15, 2022.

The winner in each of the three Media Award categories will be announced, along with the other Sovereign Award winners, in April 2022 during the 47th Annual Sovereign Awards Ceremony.
