(Photo of FIVE STAR GENERAL BY PATTI TUBBS) There is the field for the 74th BC Derby, held Saturday at Hastings Park in Vancouver. The race is part of a stakes filled day and ushers in the BC CTHS yearling sale on Sept. 10.
While last year Sky Promise mowed his way through all three western Canadian Derbies (Manitoba and Canadian plus BC), this year there could very well be three different winners. Oil Money won the Manitoba Derby and has stayed in Manitoba. Explode was placed first through the disqualification of Journeyman, owned by Godolphin.
Explode, owned by Ole A Nielsen, is in the BC Derby but the competition may be a bit tougher this time around for the $2,500 weanling purchase and son of Trappe Shot.
A winner of four straight races, Explode is actually 4 for 8 at Hastings Park since he is based there.
The guys to fear are Final Jeopardy, who had a botched beginning in his Canadian debut in the Canadian Derby but adds blinkers for Peter Redekop and Glenn Todd’s Five Star General, who will be ridden by Kentucky Derby winning jockey Mario Gutierrez. Gutierrez seeks his first BC Derby win.
Five Star General, a private purchase by Todd this summer, was a stakes winner at 2 at Aqueduct and the son of Distorted Humor handily won his first start for his new barn in the Aug. 5 Winston Churchill Derby Trial.
Funnily enough, a Five Star General has already won the BC Derby. In 1978, Golden Chance Farms’ Five Star General, a son of Lt. Stevens, came into Vancouver and won the Derby, after winning the Derby Trial. The horse went on a good career with more stakes wins at age 4 and graded stakes placings in California at age 5.
Also on the big card of racing Saturday at Hastings Park is the BC Oaks and Delta Colleen Stakes, among others.
HERE’S HANNAH, the amazing older mare who has won 11 of 12 races and 7 races in succession, will be heavily favoued in the Delta Colleen.
Here is a feature from The Province newspaper on Mario Gutierrez’s return to Hastings:
