Dr. Seth Fishman, veterinarian to Jorge Navarro and many other trainers, was convicted in U.S. District Court in Manhattan last week on federal charges that carry a sentence of up to 20 years. Dr. Fishman will be sentenced on May 5.
The Florida veterinarian was guilty of “conspiring to violate adulteration and misbranding laws and the manufacture of performance-enhancing drugs at tracks (PEDS),” reports Past the Wire, by a jury of eight women and four men.
Past the Wire reports, “It was nearly two years ago that Fishman, six other veterinarians, 11 trainers and nine others, identified as PED distributors, were charged in schemes in a conspiracy to dope horse following a two-year investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and New York federal prosecutors.”
Navarro pleaded guilty to conspiracy and was sentenced to five years. The Department of Justice noted in a release that Navarro credited Dr. Fishman for the big win by the late X Y Jet in the Golden Shaheen in Dubai. Trainer Jason Servis, who federal prosecutors say administered illegal drugs to multi-millionaire Maximum Security, the first-place finisher in the 2019 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) and was demoted to 17th by stewards for interference with another horse in the race, is awaiting trial.
Along with the Dr. Fishman conviction came a list of some 2,000 clients who purchased items from the veterinarian -some legal and some not. The list includes mostly Standardbred horsepeople from the U.S. but there are several Canadian horsepeople. It should be noted that there is no information on what anyone on the list purchased.
It is likely that the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario will sift through the local names on the list and attempt to decipher what each person purchased.
