It was a big day at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida for a group of Ontario-based horsepeople and horses as they won four of the nine races on the Friday, March 25 card.

Two Ontario-bred and sired horses won the Daily Double, races one and two, to begin the day. BAYOU BELLE, a grey daughter of Silver Max – Honey Ryder by Lasting Approval, bred by Adena Springs, won the first race at 1 mile and 70 yards on the Tapeta for owner Bruno Schickedanz and trainer Martin Drexler. Bayou Belle was winning her first race of the winter in her third outing and she was entered for $20,000 claiming.

One race later, MIKE DEPAULO’s SUPER LUNAR  won a five furlong Tapeta sprint for $20,000 claiming in her second outing for DePaulo. The filly is by Ontario sire Souper Speedy from the mare Lunar Linda by Perigee Moon and she was bred by John Carey. Super Lunar was claimed by DePaulo from Drexler on Feb. 3.

In race 6, LIDO KEY, owned by Steven Chircop, trained by William Tharrenos and ridden by Woodbine jockey Rafael Hernandez, won a starter allowance on the Tapeta. The 6-year-old Lemon Drop Kid mare was claimed for $10,000 on Feb. 10, was second in her first race for Chircop and Tharrenos and then took this 1 mile and 70 yard race by half a length.

Hernandez won two races on the card as he took race 3 with the Florida-bred filly Karla Sofia for Armando de la Cerda.

Tharrenos is 7-for-50 in 2022, DePaulo has won 4 of 18 starts and Drexler, in his first year of racing horses in the winter, is 11-for-54.
