With a well-timed stretch run, favourite Gamble’s Ghost powered up on the far outside to prevail by a neck in the $125,000 Ontario Matron Stakes (Grade 3) featured on the mid-July Sunday program at Woodbine Racetrack.

Jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva worked out the winning trip aboard Gamble’s Ghost for trainer Josie Carroll and owner/breeder Ivan Dalos, who also won last year’s edition of the 1-1/16 mile stakes race for fillies and mares with Ami’s Mesa.

Gamble’s Ghost settled off the pace second-to-last early on while the Mark Casse-trained trio of My Arch Enemy, Malibu Bonnie and Let It Ride Mom raced on top through panels of :24.65, :50.21 and 1:14.85. Still eighth turning for home, Gamble’s Ghost kicked into action down the stretch and defeated the Casse crew at the wire in 1:44.88.
