The $100,000 Charlie Barley Stakes, one of two overnight added-money races on the Queen’s Plate undercard, has drawn Live Oak Plantation homebred Global Access, a colt who has shown a great affinity for Woodbine Racetrack.

A three-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway, Global Access has contested four of his eight lifetime starts at the Toronto oval, which has yielded two wins, a second and a third.

In his most recent start ahead of the one-mile turf Charlie Barley, the chestnut took the Grade 3 Marine Stakes on May 25, besting Queens’s Plate contender Skywire by one length in the 1 1/16-mile main track feature.

“He’s training really well,” said trainer Michael Trombetta. “He came out of his last race in great shape and has continued to train well. Hopefully, he’s up for the task on Saturday.”

A three-time winner, Global Access broke his maiden at Woodbine last October, after finishing seventh in his debut at Parx Racing one month earlier.

After a third in the Display Stakes in December, the Florida-bred headed to the Sunshine State for three races, which included a win in the DRF Bets Sophomore Stakes on March 31 at Tampa Bay Downs.

Finishing second to the aforementioned Skywire in the Wando Stakes, Global Access turned the tables on his rival in the Marine.

“We tried to save him a few trips up and down the road,” said Trombetta. “But he’s shown that he likes it at Woodbine. He’s versatile between the turf and the synthetic. He should deal fine with the distance. It doesn’t matter to him whether it’s a mile, a mile-and-an-eighth or what have you. He seems to adapt to whatever comes at him.”

Last year, Ride a Comet ($6.50 to win) won the race. The son of Candy Ride delivered Mark Casse his sixth Charlie Barley score.

The Charlie Barley is race two on Saturday’s Queen’s Plate card. First race post time is 12 p.m.
