Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby have a good chance to win their third consecutive Woodbine Mile (G1) on September 14 should NAVAL POWER (GB) make the short trip up from Saratoga for the race.

The 37th Mile is part of ‘Turf Champions Day’ at Woodbine and is a Win and You’re In race for the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1). Also on the day is the Summer Stakes (G1), Natalma Stakes (G1), E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1) and Vigil Stakes (G2).

Nominations for those stakes races were posted last week and the Mile has 16 nominees including six local horses including King Edward Stakes winner Filo di Arianna, King’s Plate runner-up My Boy Prince and Connaught Cup winner Cruden Bay.

Naval Power, a Group 2 winner who was second in two Grade 1s in Kentucky in the spring and CARL SPACKLER are the two big names on the Mile list. The latter recently won the Grade 1 Fourstardave Stakes at Saratoga.

Noticeably absent from the nomination list is last year’s Mile winner Master of the Seas, who was expected to target this year’s race again.

But Naval Power, a four-year-old gelding by Teofilio, would be a strong contender as he has won six of nine races.

Whether Naval Power is set  to come to Woodbine for the Mile won’t be revealed by Godolphin and Woodbine until closer to entry day, September 11.
