Thirteen turf horses have been nominated to the Canadian International (G1) at Woodbine on October 3. The $750,000 International is joined by the Grade 2 Dance Smartly Stakes, Grade 2 Nearctic and Grade 3 Algonquin on the turf showcase afternoon.
The ever-powerful Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby team, fresh off another Woodbine Mile (G1) win with Notable Speech, have nominated ARABIAN CROWN (Fr), a 5-year-old gelding by the great Dubawi (Ire) and winner of the Kilternan Stakes (G3) at Leopardstown on September 12. It was the sixth win in 13 races for the French bred who was coming off a brilliant second-place finish to champion Rebel’s Romance in the Group 2 Princess Of Wales Stakes at Newmarket.
Following his recent victory, trainer Appleby said: “Arabian Crown set out to make the running at Newmarket and was only beaten by Rebel’s Romance, which is no bad thing. “We came here with confidence that he was going to make it a good gallop. That is what he did and {jockey Doyle] James gave him a great ride. The plan now is to go for the G1 Canadian International.”
James Doyle said: “I am very pleased with Arabian Crown. He gave Rebel’s Romance a fright last time, which proved that he is a very good horse on his day.
“Today worked out nicely. I was a bit concerned about stall one as he can be restless in the gate, but he winged the lids and pricked his ears in front. “I saved plenty all the way and then kicked off the bend. I got picked off earlier by one that was wider on the track than me, which is why I was keen to explore that avenue, although I think Arabian Crown would have won wherever he went today.”
ANCIENT EGYPT (IRE), trained by Charlie Johnston for Amo Racing USA LLC is also expected to visit Woodbine. The 3-year-old colt by Frankel is a 3-time winner who was second by a head in the Group 1 French Derby (Grand Prix du Paris) at Longchamp to Maltese Cross. The colt was sent to New Yotk where he finished fourth beaten 2 1/2 lengths over a soggy turf at Saratoga in the Christophe Clement Turf (G1).
“He’s a horse that has been campaigned aggressively this year with plenty of success, albeit it in defeat, particularly at Ascot and Paris,” said Johnston. “He has shown that he is a top-class mile-and-a-half horse on fast ground.
Miguel Clement has nominated millionaires TAWNY PORT and CARSON’S RUN, the former who was a charging second in the International last year to longshot winner Silawi. Tawny Port’s last two wins have come at 2 miles and up and he may be headed to Australis for the Melbourne Cup (G1).
Carson’s Run won three stakes races in 2024 including the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby.
Singspiel Stakes (G3) winner TOMASELLO (Authentic) and the fellow directly behind him, DANCIN IN DA’NILE are also expected to compete in the International, which is 1 1/2 miles around the E.P. Taylor turf course.
