The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Manitoba division held a successful yearling sale on Aug. 22 at the Red River Exhibition grounds.

Both the gross sales total and average yearling price had significant increases as 22 horses were sold by Manitoba breeders.

Topping the sale was a chestnut filly by Going Commando – High Pioneer by Pioneering named Island High, consigned by Cam Ziprick, Charles Fouillard, and Barry Arnason. A full sister to multiples stakes-winning Manitoba fillies Hidden Grace and Melisandre, Island High brought a bid of $52,000 from Arnason, one of the highest prices for a sale topper at the Manitoba auction.

Hidden Grace won 15 of 21 races through 2020 and was a multiple champion in her home province. Melisandre is eight for eight currently but was recently sidelined by a chip in a knee.

Going Commando, Ziprick’s successful stallion by Unbridled’s Song, came into breeding news once again this summer when a daughter of his dam’s half-sister Patti’s Regal Song, Maracuja, won the Grade 1 Coaching Club of America Oaks.

The stallion was also represented by the second highest-priced yearling, also a filly, from the mare Runaway Delite, a daughter of Mineshaft. Sold by Ziprick Thoroughbreds, the filly brought a successful bid of $16,000 from Arthur Roy.

The top male yearling was a gelding by Kentucky Bear from Midnight Shadow, by Trajectory. The youngster, a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Langara (who was recently retired) sold for $13,000 to Arnason. Ziprick Thoroughbreds consigned the yearling.

“To say we are grateful for our success at the sale today would be an understatement,” a comment from the Ziprick team said on Facebook. “We are beyond thankful to the buyers of our yearlings and so appreciative of their trust in our program. We take a lot of pride in the babies that we raise, however we remain humble – as is necessary in this business. We wish nothing but good luck (and fortune) to the new owners and their chosen trainers.”
