The elegance of Royal Ascot meets the excitement of the Kentucky Derby with the return of the Greenwood Stakes – an afternoon of high stakes horse races, style, art installations, mixologist competitions, live music, gourmet food and lawn games set to kick spring in to high fashion in Toronto.
Now in its sophomore year, the event will take place Saturday, May 25, 2019, from 12 – 5 p.m. at Woodbine Racetrack. Presented once again by event producers Parade Agency and The Social Concierge, this year will see the event’s footprint expand to the brand new Trackside Paddock area. This unique event space, created as part of Woodbine’s ongoing renovations, will celebrate its grand opening with Greenwood Stakes and is located on the inside of the world-class E.P. Taylor Turf Course.
Named in homage to the 19th century Greenwood Raceway that had its heyday in Toronto’s roaring 20’s, the Greenwood Stakes will bring out the city’s see-and-be-seen crowd clad in bespoke seersucker suits, fascinators and Southern Belle-inspired finery to take part in the festivities of a day at the track. The centrepiece of the day will be the running of a full program of thrilling Thoroughbred Greenwood Stakes races, with a post time of 1 p.m. The featured $125,000 Greenwood Stakes is for Ontario-bred horses three years old and up and will be contested over six furlongs. Full programming, food and beverage details for the Greenwood Stakes will be announced in the coming weeks.
“We have been thrilled with the response from young business and hospitality professionals, artists, entrepreneurs and fashionistas,” said Tyson Villeneuve, Partner, The Social Concierge. “Toronto is a city of trendsetters, with its people having a fierce sense of individual style. We expect our guests to be upping their game even further this year as we cement the Greenwood Stakes as Toronto’s must-attend, fashion-forward social affair to kick off the spring.”
Drawing on signature elements of Vancouver-based sister event Deighton Cup – dubbed by press and attendees as the city’s biggest fashion and social event of the summer, attracting more than 6,000 people every year – the Greenwood Stakes brings two popular competitions to Toronto: the Style Stakes Best Dressed Awards and the Cocktail Jockey Mixology Showcase.
