Canadians were once again present at a winter mixed sale south of the border with a handful of racing prospects, mares and yearlings selling to horsepeople in the north at the Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale in Lexington, Kentucky, Feb. 8 and 9.

During the two-sale sale, 425 horses sold for a gross of $12,506,700, up 28% from $9,777,100 for 368 sold in 2020. The average was $29,428, an 11% increase over last year’s average of $26,568. The median rose 18% from $8,500 in 2020 to $10,000 this year. The RNA rate fell 6% from last year to 18.9%.

Here are some of the Canadian buyers:

GLEN TODD’S NORTH AMERICAN THOROUGHBRED HORSE COMPANY bought a yearling filly by Laoban – Pass Partout, a yearling colt by Exaggerator – Maccorleot for $15,000, and a yearling filly by Will Take Charge – Rue de L’Ange for $7,500.

NICK NOSOWENKO purchased Miss Vancougar, a 3-year-old racing or broodmare prospect by Vancouver – Blarney Blush for $4,500. Nosowenko, who does good work each year picking up racing prospects, also bought Helia, an Outwork 3-year-old filly and a half-sister to stakes winner Battier, for $4,500.

SEAN FITZHENRY paid $12,000 for the Ontario-bred 3-year-old racing or broodmare prospect Moon Rainbow, a Union Rags filly from stakes-placed Moon Rainbow, a full sister to stakes winner Smartyfly.

DONATO LANNI, as agent for Daniel Plouffe, bought the 4-year-old colt Thames River (GB) for $30,000. The winning son of Free Eagle is a half-brother to St. James Palace Stakes (G1) winner Barney Roy and he will join trainer Reneé Kieran’s stable at Woodbine.

Mario Forgione’s HENLEY FARMS made two purchases during the two-day sale. So Jaded, a racing or broodmare prospect by Bernardini from the stakes-placed Maristar, a daughter of champion Jewel Princess, was bought for $35,000. Forgione also paid $57,000 for City Tap, a 3-year-old racing or broodmare prospect by Tapit from the Galileo mare Urban Ball who is a half -sister to champion Perfect Soul (Ire).

SHANNONDOE FARM paid $40,000 for Lemondropontherox, a mare by Lemon Drop Kid out of Grade 3 winner Roxelana, whose first foal is graded stakes -placed Ladies Night. Lemondropoftherox is in foal to Grade 1 winner World of Trouble.

Track West Racing bought J T Safe at Home, a Bernstein mare, for $1,000.
