As we approach the end of a successful 2024, Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) is gearing up for even greater success in 2025 with significant enhancements to its Breed Improvement Programs (BIP). The programs, which have already paid out substantial bonuses to breeders and owners, are set for an impressive expansion, reflecting HRA’s commitment to fostering a robust horse racing industry in Alberta.
In 2024, Alberta-bred Thoroughbreds and their breeders celebrated big, with over $628,000 in Breeders’ Bonus winnings and $532,294 in Owner Bonuses, highlighting the effectiveness of HRA’s funding efforts. These bonuses, funded by $2,397,168 from HRA through the Breed Improvement Programs, recognized and rewarded the industry’s unwavering dedication and commitment. With bonuses over 21% to breeders and 30% to owners, the programs have proven to be highly rewarding, underscoring the financial viability and attractiveness of investing in Alberta’s racing sector.
Looking forward to 2025, HRA has announced an increase of over $400,000 into the Breed Improvement pools, bringing the total to $2,829,990, signaling a record level of support for the industry. This increase is part of a broader strategy to enhance the competitive edge of Alberta-bred horses both locally and on larger stages. For the first time in history, the Alberta Fall Classic races will see an increase in stakes purses from $50,000 to $60,000. Additionally, a new North American bonus will offer a 20% payout for Alberta-bred horses that win races with purses over $40,000 for allowance and $50,000 for stakes outside of Alberta.
The 2024 racing season demonstrated the exceptional quality of Alberta-bred racehorses and the rewards achievable for breeders and owners through Horse Racing Alberta’s incentive programs. Thanks to the generous support of the Thoroughbred Breed Improvement Program, breeders and owners are seeing their efforts pay off in thrilling ways, both on the racetrack and in their bottom line. The Breeders’ and Owners’ Bonuses recognize the crucial role these individuals play in the sport, showcasing the success of Alberta’s commitment to nurturing and promoting excellence in homegrown talent.
Pierre Esquirol’s breeding program delivered an outstanding performance this season, earning an impressive $55,253 in Breeders’ Bonuses, reflecting the consistent success of his horses on the track. Highfield Investment Group Inc. upheld their reputation for excellence, earning $48,368 in Breeders’ Bonuses, further solidifying their impact on the industry. Bar None Ranches Ltd. also had an exceptional year, earning $37,284 in Breeders’ Bonuses.
Alberta Thoroughbred owners demonstrated the significant value of Horse Racing Alberta’s Owners Bonus program, which plays a crucial role in supporting their success in a competitive racing environment. This program provides a tangible incentive for investing in Alberta-bred horses, rewarding owners for their dedication to the industry. Empire Equestrian and Kerredge Farm’s horses collectively amassed over $180,000 in purse earnings, earning a 30% bonus on eligible races. Not far behind, horses from Bar None Ranches Ltd. brought in over $160,000.
Additionally, Alberta-bred horses owned by entities such as Ryan Stetson, Stetson Inc., Stetson Enterprises and Everblack Cattle Co. also saw significant bonuses, notably fueled by the achievements of the two-year-old filly No More Lies, who garnered over $120,000 during her impressive season.
Together, these breeders and owners highlight how the Breed Improvement Program fosters growth and success for industry members committed to quality. Their successes are proof of the incredible opportunities available through the Thoroughbred Breed Improvement Program, which continues to drive the growth and prosperity of Alberta’s breeding and racing sectors.
Horse Racing Alberta remains dedicated to its vision of a thriving, sustainable racing industry. With the planned increases in funding and the introduction of innovative bonuses, 2025 is poised to be a landmark year that will further enhance the profile of Alberta-bred horses, ensuring they continue to achieve and exceed expectations both at home and internationally.
