As we approach the end of a successful 2024, Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) is gearing up for even greater success in 2025 with significant enhancements to its Breed Improvement Programs (BIP). The programs, which have already paid out substantial bonuses to breeders and owners, are set for an impressive expansion, reflecting HRA’s commitment to fostering a robust horse racing industry in Alberta.

In 2024, Alberta-bred Thoroughbreds and their breeders celebrated big, with over $628,000 in Breeders’ Bonus winnings and $532,294 in Owner Bonuses, highlighting the effectiveness of HRA’s funding efforts. These bonuses, funded by $2,397,168 from HRA through the Breed Improvement Programs, recognized and rewarded the industry’s unwavering dedication and commitment. With bonuses over 21% to breeders and 30% to owners, the programs have proven to be highly rewarding, underscoring the financial viability and attractiveness of investing in Alberta’s racing sector.

Looking forward to 2025, HRA has announced an increase of over $400,000 into the Breed Improvement pools, bringing the total to $2,829,990, signaling a record level of support for the industry. This increase is part of a broader strategy to enhance the competitive edge of Alberta-bred horses both locally and on larger stages. For the first time in history, the Alberta Fall Classic races will see an increase in stakes purses from $50,000 to $60,000. Additionally, a new North American bonus will offer a 20% payout for Alberta-bred horses that win races with purses over $40,000 for allowance and $50,000 for stakes outside of Alberta.
