I’m a Kittyhawk collared Rootham Triple E’s in the shadow of the wire to take Saturday’s $125,000 Lady Angela Stakes, at Woodbine.
Trained by Robert Crean for Jonathan, Martin, Nicholas and Victoria Earle, I’m A Kittyhawk was expertly ridden by David Moran, settling along the rail in the seven furlong ‘Poly’ stake before finding her best stride late to score a half-length win.
Nahima was quickest from the gate but the speedy Rootham Triple E’s took command after a quarter in :23.98. Strut the Course, sent to post as the 3-5 favourite, rallied wide through the turn as Moran waited patiently to give I’m a Kittyhawk her cue.
Rootham Triple E’s surged away from the field at the top of the lane, as I’m a Kittyhawk angled off the rail and was up just in time to score in a final running time of 1:23.82. Piper’s Future rallied for show money.
Moran was pleased with the effort of the dark bay Tomahawk filly.
“I just wanted to settle this one behind horses going seven (furlongs),” said Moran. “She switched off very well, and quickened up very nice for me. She’s a really nice filly and she’s been training real good all spring.”
Moran believes that I’m a Kittyhawk, bred in Ontario by Martin and Victoria Earle, can continue to improve with the lucrative Woodbine Oaks, presented by Budweiser, on the horizon.
“I think there’s more to come from her, she galloped out beautifully after the race,” said Moran. “She’s one to look forward to.”
I’m a Kittyhawk banked $75,000 in victory, while improving her record to 2-1-0 from three career starts.
She returned $41.80, $17.20 and $8.80, pairing with Rootham Triple E’s ($4.60, $4.20) for a $143.40 (2-4) exactor. A 2-4-5 (Piper’s Future, $4.70 to show) triactor was worth $258.15. Strut the Course completed a $1 Superfecta (2-4-5-1) worth $485.20.
